Possession day feels like a finish line, but there is one job worth doing before the moving truck rolls up: cleaning the empty house. No furniture to work around, no boxes in the way, every corner reachable. It is the cheapest, fastest version of a deep clean you will ever get — and it means the home starts out feeling like yours, not like the last person's.
Start With the Kitchen — You'll Need It First
Open every cabinet and drawer and wipe inside, not just the doors. Crumbs, spills, and that sticky film along shelf edges are standard in even well-kept homes. Degrease the stovetop and inside the oven, wipe the fridge inside and out (shelves out if you can), and run the dishwasher empty once so it starts fresh. If the home is in a newer suburb like Summerside or Heritage Valley and the build is recent, also check counters and cupboard tops for fine construction dust — it settles everywhere for months after a build.
Bathrooms: Sanitize, Don't Just Shine
Someone else's bathroom deserves more than a surface wipe. Disinfect the toilet inside, around the base, and behind it; scrub tub and shower grout, where Edmonton hard water leaves scale; and wipe inside vanity drawers and the medicine cabinet. Check the exhaust fan cover while you're in there — a dust-caked fan barely moves air, and in a sealed-up Edmonton winter that is how bathroom mould gets started.
The Empty-Room Details Everyone Skips
With no furniture in the way, this is your one easy chance at the details: inside closets (shelves, rods, and floors), baseboards all the way around, window tracks and sills, light switches and door handles, and the tops of door frames. Vacuum heating vents and cold-air returns you can reach — whatever dust is sitting in them will be circulating through your home the day the furnace kicks on.
Renters: photograph everything as you go, before your things arrive. A quick set of dated photos of floors, walls, and appliances protects your deposit — the same standard a good move-out clean is judged against works in your favour when you move in.
Edmonton Possession-Day Realities
A few local wrinkles. Winter possessions mean salt and grit tracked through during showings and inspections, so budget a proper mop, not a quick sweep. Moving into a downtown or Oliver condo? Book the elevator with the condo board before you book anything else, and confirm where the cleaners can park and load. And if the previous occupant left the place in rough shape, tell your realtor the same day — a move-in clean is much easier to sort out before your furniture is in the middle of it.
Before or After the Movers?
Before. Always before, if the timing allows it. An empty-home clean typically takes 3 to 5 hours depending on size and condition, and every job on the list above is slower and less thorough once beds and couches are parked on top of the floors. Our new homeowner checklist covers the day-one priorities if you're buying; for renters, the list above plus photos is the whole game.
When It's Worth Hiring Out
Honestly? Possession week is chaos — lawyers, keys, address changes, a truck, and two homes to be in at once. A professional move-in clean booked for the gap between keys and furniture means you walk into a sanitized, ready home instead of spending moving night scrubbing someone else's oven. Tell us your possession date and we'll work around it — possession days shift, and we flex with them. Quotes are free and usually back within 2 hours during opening hours.
